‘The idea of the painting came to me in an instant one day after I heard myself gushing about Ireland to a friend and describing, “the green patchwork fields of Ireland.” I was excited and recruited the little red-headed girl who lived two houses away, Marin Sweeney, as a model. Marin was recovering from a fever and so unavailable to pose, but her mother took me up to her room and I took several photos of her as she lay asleep under a quilt, her cheeks flush with the fever. I set out to paint Marin and that green patchwork quilt but struggled, unable to capture the magic of those fields. So as I often do, I put the painting aside for awhile. A few months later my wife and I flew to Ireland and as we came in over the west coast approaching Shannon Airport, Karen looked out the window and said, “Look! There’s Marin’s quilt!” I leaned past her and looked out the window and saw immediately what I was doing wrong with my painting, missing the colors, the irregular shapes of the landscape, and more. When we returned home I set back to work on the painting, now named, of course, “Marin’s Quilt.” In all I’ve painted Marin Sweeney five times now.’
