About the Artist
Last December 2014, I was one of the lucky few to be invited to witness the winter solstice in Newgrange and although a stubborn blanketed sky refused to let even the barest glimpse of the winter sunrise through, that morning has stayed with me and has steered the direction of my work in the intervening months.
I have begun to explore the wondrous wealth that is contained within the ancient Irish legends and how they are, in fact, a literary version of archaeological remains – a kind of museum of the mind, providing fascinating insights into our ancient past.
Drawing inspiration from my love of medieval manuscripts and religious art, I have been working on a collection of paintings exploring Irish legends and mythology.
I studied Fine Art, specializing in painting, at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. For many years, I worked exclusively in the area of Landscape, Life Drawing and Portraiture. In recent years, my work has taken a change of direction and my main focus in painting is on the narrative, where I draw much inspiration from medieval manuscripts and religious iconography.
I am also very interest in traditional printmaking , and am a member of The Leinster Print Studio (www.leinsterprintstudio.com), a group of print makers, based in Clane, Co. Kildare.
Life drawing is equally a strong interest of mine and I consider it an essential aspect of my work.
