About the Artist
Born in Dublin 1964, Desmond grew up in Laytown, Co. Meath. He studied Art
at Waterford College of Art and Design (Dipl.Design/Communications)
graduating in 1986.
Since then he has worked in the Animation Industry as a Background Painter,
Location Designer, Art Director, in Europe, Asia and the USA. including 7 years in
Germany and 6 years at Dreamworks Animation Studios, California.
He moved from Los Angeles to Mayo in 2003 to continue his painting career
focusing on Landscape painting, en Plein Air, “Painting A Day” project and larger
Studio pieces. His work looks at the sometimes “mundane” or “every day” places
that surround the West and North West of Ireland. Subjects include the landscape,
working farms, factories or disused Industrial estates.
“On location I work with a small tripod mounted “Pochade” Box which allows me
to sketch in all terrain. Irish weather however, being Irish weather, will never keep
still and this becomes quite a challenge. Colour and the sense of place are what
inspire me. After a day on location, and if luck will have it, a painting in the bag!
I come away with a relationship with that place.”
Desmond has exhibited with
Californian Plein Air Group, Los Angeles,
The Kilternan Gallery, Dublin.
The Lavelle Gallery, Clifden.
SeaSkyShore Gallery, Westport.
The Cat and the Moon Gallery, Sligo
and currently from his own Gallery
