About the Artist
Letterfrack, in Connemara, is where Dympna Heanue has lived all her adult life. The beauty of the landscape there has long been an inspiration for her work, as it has for countless artists, poets and writers for generations.
Working mainly in oils, her early work was picturesque, and her paintings found themselves in all corners of the globe. Her painting style has been constantly changing, like the colour and light in the landscapes which have become her favoured subject. Working mainly in acrylics, her work of late includes found objects, and turf mould, which not only adds texture to her paintings, but which represents a part of the blanket bog which covers most of the Connemara landscape. The latest series of paintings have returned to less abstract work, whilst retaining the use of textural dark colours enabling the viewer to perceive a sense of the beauty of place. The often changeless inclement weather contrasts with the light, giving that wonderful atmospheric effect peculiar to the Connemara landscape.
