About the Artist
Ellen is an American-born Israeli, having emigrated to Jerusalem in 1962.
She majored in art in high school & studied at the Tyler School of Fine Art in Philadelphia, PA. before her emigration. In Israel, she studied Archaeology & Jewish history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, receiving her BA in 1968. She then worked as an archaeologist at the excavation of the Southern Wall in Jerusalem for the next 5 years. At this time she decided to return to her art and proceeded to study at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, receiving her BFA in 1976, having specialized in printmaking. After graduation, she set up a studio in her home, working mainly in silk screen, oils and photography. Over the years she has had many private students as well as teaching in various institutions. She has had over 30 one-woman exhibitions in Israel & abroad and has exhibited in Ireland several times. Most recently at the Clew Bay Hotel in Westport & through the Greenway Artists. Her work has always been figurative and people oriented, capturing her subjects involved in what they are doing, not posing. In recent years she has specialized in the portrayal of Jazz musicians, as an expression of her love for Jazz. She now has over 150 Jazz-related works. She recently completed her book ‘Jazz Gallery’ available at www.viovio.com Also available there is ‘The Irish Connection.’ Since the early 1980’s, Ellen has been making frequent & prolonged visits to Ireland and recently decided to spend most of her time residing in Westport. Ireland has inspired her, for the first time, to try her hand at landscape.
