About the Artist
I paint full-time and work from my studio in north county Wicklow. I use a variety of media and I like to experiment with surfaces, subjects and materials. I am excited about the stuff paint is and I like to stretch it, and my experience of it in as many ways as possible. I am keen en plein air painter and have won many awards for this work, including the Gold Award at Art in the Open (2014) in Wexford and my all-time favourite, the Artists’ Choice Award (2013) at the same event. I have exhibited widely and have had 7 solo painting exhibitions.
Having been an artist all my life, I recognise that my creativity has taken many forms. On leaving school, I entered the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. It was an end, and a beginning. I promptly gave up the painting I loved in favour of photography, performance and video work.
On graduating from NCAD in 1983, I established an international reputation. Over the next 15 years, I exhibited in venues across the world, including the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, the National Museum of Photography in Tokyo and New Langton Arts in San Francisco. During this time I received numerous commissions and awards, including the Gracie Fields Live Art Bursary, and my photographic work was acquired by the National Self-Portrait Collection. In the mid-1990s, I took a creative detour into journalism, and 15 years ago, I turned full circle, and began painting again.
My work is held in both public and private collections at home and abroad.
