About the Artist
My childhood was spent in the Sperrin Mountains of County Tyrone and I studied Fine Art, Painting & Printmaking in Belfast 1971-6.
Since then I have been professional artist and illustrator. My early career was based in London and since 1993 I have lived in the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Landscape, literature, love and lyrics have always been my inspiration and my imagery has a dreamlike quality, a romantic sensuality, with women and lovers as the subject. More recently the figures are in the landscape setting. The main body of my work tends to be pastels on paper and acrylics on linen or canvas, with occasional stonecarving.
Since 2016 I’ve been working on a series of watercolours, both figurative and landscape, on beautiful Indian Khadi handmade coloured papers.
My works are in the public collections of:
Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Aura Soma Products Limited, Belfast Telegraph, Bedfordshire County Council, Somerset County Council, Ulster Television
Private collections in:
Austria, Australia, Britain, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Spain, USA.
“I live with with her feminist, exotic, powerful, fertile images that celebrate women …” Rynagh O’Grady Irish actress
“Phyllis Mahon’s images are always reminiscent of poetry…her figures are drawn with a clean, simple, sweeping line but the subdued colours of her pastels, lit with flashes of gold, orange and purple, glow with an interior warmth that gives them an ardent carnality…” Lionel Philips 1993
